3xB: New Holland Beerhive Tripel

This Week’s Big Bottle:  New Holland Beerhive Tripel

The New Holland Beerhive Tripel.  It’s a tripel… with honey.  Though, you probably could’ve guessed that from the name.

The idea of adding honey to a tripel doesn’t seem like a bad one.  I mean, tripels are great beers.  They’re very complex; interesting aromas, packed full of flavor, and enough booze to knock you over.  And honey by itself is an interesting thing; it’s sweet, earthy, and has that clover feature that’s hard to put your finger on.  So, putting the two together should be a slam dunk, right?

Well, kinda.  Not really.

The Beerhive Tripel poured a deep bronze color, but didn’t have much of a head (as you can tell from the grainy picture over there).  The aroma reminded me of ginger, which I definitely wasn’t expecting.  The flavor was malty, sweet, surprisingly tangy, and finished bitter.  It was also a bit on the ginger side, I’m not sure where the ginger flavor came from.  Maybe the mixture of the tripel and the honey?  I really wasn’t happy with the ginger.

Overall, it was okay.  Not awful, but not something I would drink regularly.  So, if you’ve got other big bottles to choose from, I’d skip this one.
