Brew Review-District Chophouse Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout
Yes, you read that right. Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout. Barrett Oliver, the head brewer over at District Chophouse, had the awesome (though slightly insane) idea of taking an already strong beer and sitting it in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels. Let me be one of the first to say, “Barrett, thank you for being a bit crazy.”
The Barrel Aged RIS pours black out of the cask. It has a full bourbon boozy aroma with a little raisin mixed in so you know it’s not straight bourbon. Upon first sip, the bourbon hits hard up front burning your tongue a bit. It’s very thick and malty, a nice creamy mouthfeel. Then kicks back into bourbon mode at the end.
It’s a tasty beer, and not likely to be around long, so make sure you stop into the Chophouse.
